The misery index is consistently high in pockets of disenfranchised neighborhoods throughout the city. Some neighborhoods have extreme crime rates, and face high unemployment, generational poverty, lack of access, and are riddled with diabetes, heart disease, and childhood obesity. It is my belief that the built environment plays a significant role in health status and neighborhood characteristics like the proximity of fresh food, walkability, complete streets, and access to green spaces and play areas all impact health status and quality of life. For the past three years I have been working with city leaders in planning and development and advocating for community development in poor, disenfranchised neighborhoods in South East and West Fresno for the purpose of eliminating poverty housing and building safe, walkable neighborhoods.”
